Fit guide
Big vs. Tall
Brands like Carhartt sell Big and Tall as separate sizes.
| Size type | Examples | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Big | 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL | Room through the chest, belly and seat |
| Tall | LT, XLT, 2XLT, 3XLT, 4XLT | Extra body and sleeve length |
If a shirt fits your chest but rides up or the sleeves are short, try Tall. If it pulls across the chest or belly, go Big. Some guys need both, like 3XLT.
How to measure
- Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms, tape level.
- Waist: where you actually wear your pants, not where the label says.
- Feet: measure length and width in the evening, when feet are largest.
Then compare against the size chart on the specific Amazon listing. Charts differ by brand.
Shoe widths
| Width | Label |
|---|---|
| D | Standard men's width |
| 2E | Wide |
| 4E | Extra-wide |
| 6E | Extra-extra-wide |
Not every model comes in every width. The shoes page lists the range each listing actually carries.
Socks and underwear
Sock sizes map to shoe sizes, and they differ by brand. Carhartt's XL fits men's shoe sizes 12 to 14.5. Darn Tough's XXL fits 15 to 17. Underwear sizes map to waist inches: Jockey's Big Man chart puts 3XL at 48 to 50 inches, 4XL at 52 to 54, 5XL at 56 to 58 and 6XL at 60 to 62.
Weight ratings
A chair or cot rating is usually a static load, meaning weight that sits still. Dropping into a chair or rolling over on a cot hits it harder. Leave a buffer above your weight, and check seat width too, since a high rating doesn't guarantee a wide seat. We only quote ratings the maker publishes.
Axe handle length
- Hatchets (13 to 14 in): one hand, close work, kindling.
- Chopping axes (about 24 to 26 in): limbing and felling.
- Splitting axes and mauls (36 in): tall users splitting rounds. A longer handle keeps your back straighter at the block.
